Driving By, Dawn
Pastel on Paper, 15.75 x 11.75
My husband and I were heading home after visiting our daughter, who was approaching her graduation from UNC-Chapel Hill. We traveled a scenic highway, weaving through serene farmland, glimpses of animals, and canopies of trees. I began to experiment with capturing photos of the countryside from our moving car as dusk painted the sky with its fading light. Amidst the collection of blurred and light-dappled images, one photograph resonated with me. It showcased a beautiful interplay of light, trees, and the evening sky. Pastel seemed the perfect medium to recreate this scene, with its gentle layers of color describing the transition from day to night. The title "Driving By" evokes the blurred essence of the foliage in motion, and though it was dusk, "Dawn" felt like a more poetic embrace of the fleeting beauty I had witnessed.
This painting was accepted into the American Impressionist Society's 2025 Small Works Showcase.
